A South Tyrolean wine text can change languages within a few lines. German and Italian are both embedded in the region’s public life, while English references often choose one form or place them side by side. This glossary favours paired names so readers can recognise the same place, grape or cellar idea in different contexts.

Places and growing

Südtirol · Alto Adige
South Tyrol, the autonomous northern Italian region where Alpine and Mediterranean conditions meet.
Bozen · Bolzano
The regional capital and the warm basin below the Santa Maddalena and surrounding vineyard slopes.
Weinberg · vigneto · vineyard
The planted site itself. In local usage it can imply a parcel shaped by slope, exposure and farming history.
Lage · zona / sito · site
A place-specific vineyard context. Legal precision varies, so check whether the term is descriptive or formally delimited.
Weinlese · vendemmia · harvest
The picking period and work of bringing grapes in from the vineyard.
Rebsorte · vitigno · grape variety
The cultivated vine variety, distinct from a wine’s geographic designation.

Grapes

Vernatsch · Schiava
The local red family central to Santa Maddalena and several traditional South Tyrolean styles.
Lagrein
An indigenous red variety strongly associated with the warm Bolzano basin and nearby gravelly sites.
Weissburgunder · Pinot Bianco
A white Pinot variety found in cooler or elevated sites, valued for texture and restrained aroma.
Blauburgunder · Pinot Nero
Pinot Noir, a site-sensitive red variety often associated with cooler, ventilated slopes.
Gewürztraminer
An aromatic white variety whose name is closely linked with Tramin / Termeno.
Sangiovese
The central red grape of Montalcino; in that area the name Brunello is traditionally used for the local grape expression.

Cellar and origin

Kellerei · cantina · cellar
The place or organisation where grapes are fermented and wine is matured. In South Tyrol it may also denote a cooperative.
Gärung · fermentazione · fermentation
The microbial conversion that transforms grape must into wine; it may begin with ambient or selected yeasts.
Ausbau · affinamento · élevage
The period and choices through which a wine develops after fermentation, including vessel and time.
Herkunft · origine · origin
Geographic provenance in the ordinary wine sense, from region to subzone and more specific place.
DOC
Denominazione di Origine Controllata, a protected Italian designation governed by a production discipline.
Unterzone · sottozona · subzone
A formally recognised area within a wider designation, often with more specific production conditions.

Translation cannot replace context. Vernatsch and Schiava may point to the same grape family, but a label also needs a place and style. “Kellerei” can mean a physical cellar or a cooperative organisation. “Lage” may be casual site language or part of a more precise geographic system. Read the terms with the appellation guide, grape reference and cellar-practice article.
